Appel Farm’s Summer Arts Camp combines the best qualities of a traditional summer camp with superior arts programs in a supportive, community-centered environment. Campers are encouraged to grow, to explore, to find their voices and gain new insights on the arts, the world and the contributions they can make as creative and caring individuals.

Two, four, and eight week sessions are held from late June through August: each session allows students to create programs that focus on three art forms while at the same time encouraging participation in a wealth of other activities and events. Working very closely with staff gives campers the opportunity to adapt their programs and gain confidence, self-esteem and a sense of empowerment as they learn new processes, improve skills, and work with new media and art forms. Campers study with students of varying skill levels and ages at times, while individual lessons and special interest groups give the personalized training that allows each camper to advance according to their passion and capability. Opportunities to engage in a wide variety of interdisciplinary and community projects challenges campers to become involved in community life in very different ways. Year after year, campers and parents have come to treasure the sense of cooperation, respect and freedom that Appel Farm offers.

Design Your Own Program!

WeldingSpend your summer in a place where you can immerse yourself in the arts in a relaxed and enjoyable way! Appel Farm is a place to grow, a community where life-long friendships are made. Structured classes are balanced with workshops, performances, games and sports, group projects, trips, and all kinds of fun and outdoor activities. Each day is filled with times to work together in groups, individually and with your instructors.

Design a dynamic program centered on one Major and two Minors that you will study six days a week for the entire session. Majors meet each morning for 2 1/2 hours and Minors are held in 75-minute sessions each afternoon. Campers are encouraged to choose a Major in the program they are most interested in. Minors, which offer the same focused instruction in shorter time periods, are great for trying a new art form or continuing to study a familiar or advanced area of interest. Majors and Minors are open to beginners as well as advanced students – small classes allow you to learn and experiment with new ideas in a friendly, non-competitive and collaborative Dance Classenvironment.

Each Spring, campers are asked to select one Major and two Minors from core program areas in Music, Theater, Dance, Visual Arts, Media Arts (Photography, Video, Recording Arts, Creative Writing, Journalism), and Sports and Swim. Upon your arrival at Appel Farm on Registration Day, campers meet with Department Heads to confirm their choices or make changes to their program. Program changes may also involve selecting one of the several exciting new Minors that are developed by staff during Staff Orientation Week. These Minors supplement the core programs and are born of the dynamic personalities and unique talents of each summer’s staff. These Minors often push the boundaries of core programs or combine disciplines in innovative ways. Recent special Minors offered have included Art for Social Change, the Mural Minor, Folk Dancing and Stage Combat. You can also choose a Free Choice activity each day and fill your free time, if you choose, with an ever-changing schedule of dynamic artistic, educational, recreational and social activities. Read on for descriptions of all of our major program areas in detail.
