Discover the art of pottery in Pottery 101, a welcoming introduction to the pottery wheel at Appel Farm Arts & Music Center. Designed for adults with little to no experience, this course is also a great fit for returning beginners looking to refresh their skills and build confidence at the wheel.

Over ten weeks, students will learn the fundamentals of pottery, including how the wheel functions, proper use of clay tools, different types of clay bodies, the basics of glaze, and the ceramic firing process. Through demonstrations, hands-on practice, and individualized instruction, participants will develop foundational skills such as centering clay, pulling walls, shaping forms, and refining finished pieces.

Taught by Appel Farm Teaching Artist and ceramicist Alissa Clayton, the class balances technical instruction with creative exploration. Students are encouraged to pursue their own interests and curiosities as they develop their skills, creating functional and artistic ceramic work that reflects their personal style.

Throughout the session, students will complete the full ceramic process—from forming pieces on the wheel to glazing and firing their work. Participants will keep all finished pieces created during the course.

Whether you're trying wheel throwing for the first time or returning to the studio after time away, this class offers a supportive and engaging environment to learn, experiment, and create with clay.

All materials are included.

Pottery 102: Intermediate Exploration builds on the foundational skills introduced in Pottery 101 and is designed for students who already have a basic understanding of working on the pottery wheel. Strongly encouraged for those who have completed Pottery 101 or have equivalent wheel throwing experience, this intermediate-level course offers an opportunity to refine techniques, expand creative possibilities, and gain confidence working with clay.

Over ten weeks, students will deepen their understanding of the ceramic process through more advanced wheel throwing projects and technical challenges. Topics may include throwing larger forms, creating matching sets, exploring lidded vessels, refining trimming techniques, and incorporating handles and other attachments. Students will also experiment with a variety of clay bodies and learn more advanced glazing and surface decoration methods, including glaze layering, wax resist, and other decorative approaches.

Taught by Appel Farm Teaching Artist and ceramicist Alissa Clayton, the class combines technical skill-building with creative exploration. Through demonstrations, hands-on practice, and individualized instruction, participants will strengthen their wheel throwing techniques while developing a personal artistic voice. Students are encouraged to pursue independent projects that align with their interests, creating both functional and sculptural ceramic work.

Throughout the session, students will complete the full ceramic process—from throwing and refining forms to glazing and firing finished pieces. Participants will keep all completed work created during the course.

Whether you're looking to sharpen your skills, tackle more complex forms, or continue your ceramic journey in a supportive studio environment, Pottery 102 offers the guidance and creative space to take your pottery practice to the next level.

Recommended Experience: Completion of Pottery 101 or equivalent wheel throwing experience is strongly encouraged.
