Our facilities and grounds are the foundation of this mission—providing safe, welcoming, and inspiring spaces for artists, educators, students, and community members alike.
Position Summary
The Grounds & Facility Technician is responsible for the care and upkeep of Appel Farm’s 110-acre campus, including environmentally sensitive areas, 20+ buildings, machinery, and facility systems. This position requires hands-on work across multiple disciplines—landscaping, carpentry, plumbing, electrical, and pool operations—to ensure the property remains safe, functional, and welcoming for all who use it.
The ideal candidate is skilled and reliable, comfortable operating heavy machinery, ladders, and power tools, able to lift up to 60 lbs, and committed to high standards of safety, stewardship, and teamwork.
This role works closely with the Executive Leader of Infrastructure, fellow Grounds and Facilities Technicians, Operations staff, Event Coordinators, and seasonal overhire staff. Housing may be available upon request.
Key Responsibilities
Land Maintenance
- Perform routine care and upkeep of 110 acres, with special attention to environmentally sensitive areas.
- Operate landscaping equipment (mowers, trimmers, chainsaws, etc.) safely and effectively.
- Implement sustainable landscaping and land management practices.
Building & Facility Maintenance
- Maintain and repair property buildings, including systems, surfaces, and fixtures.
- Perform inspections, troubleshooting, and repairs on HVAC, plumbing, and electrical systems.
- Support carpentry, structural repairs, and painting as needed.
Pool Operations
- Assist with daily and seasonal pool maintenance, including water treatment and safety checks.
- Ensure pool area safety, cleanliness, and compliance with health codes.
- Complete Certified Pool Operator training within first six months.
Safety & Compliance
- Follow safety procedures and use personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Adhere to Appel Farm’s operational best practices as well as state and federal regulations.
- Maintain accurate records of inspections, maintenance, and repairs.
Awareness & Respect
- Work respectfully around lessees, staff, and program participants, ensuring minimal disruption.
- Maintain a safe and professional presence around children and youth.
Equipment Operation
- Operate and maintain heavy machinery (tractors, backhoes, etc.).
- Safely use ladders, scaffolding, and other tools to complete tasks at height.
Technology & Communication
- Use project management software and digital tools to track and communicate work.
Engage in ongoing training to grow skills in carpentry, plumbing, electrical, and related fields. - Stay informed on best practices in environmental stewardship and sustainable maintenance.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent required; technical training a plus.
- Experience in groundskeeping, facility maintenance, or related work preferred.
- Basic skills in carpentry, plumbing, electrical, and landscaping; willingness to learn required.
- Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively.
- Clear communication skills; ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
- Comfortable with technology and project management tools.
- Should live within 20 minutes driving radius of Appel Farm Arts and Music Center.
- Valid driver’s license required.
- Ability to lift up to 60 lbs.
- Employment is contingent on successful completion of a background check and three professional references.
Work Schedule
- Full-time, 40 hours per week.
- Some evening, weekend, and holiday hours required to support programs and events.
