Scholastic Art & Writing Awards
What is it?
Founded in 1923 by Maurice R. Robinson, the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards is the nation’s longest-running, most prestigious recognition program for creative teens. Appel Farm hosts the South Jersey Regional Competition for the visual art categories. National Medalists are eligible for scholarships of up to $12,500.
When is it?
Regional registration is typically open October through mid-December each year. Regional adjudication typically takes place mid-December through mid-January with winners announced at the end of January with Appel Farm hosting the Regional Art Award Ceremony early March. National adjudication then takes place mid-March.
Who can participate?
Creative teens (13+) in grades 7–12 from Middlesex, Monmouth, Mercer, Somerset, Hunterdon, Atlantic, Burlington, Camden, Cape May, Cumberland, Gloucester, Ocean, and Salem Counties in New Jersey may participate in the South Jersey Art Region.
How to Enter

- Submission fees are $10 per invdividual submission and $30 per portfolio submission.
- Enter your work by the December deadline.
- Every category has specific requirements. Please read the category descriptions carefully.
Important Dates for the 2026 Regional Scholastic Art & Writing Awards
- October 1st, 2025: Registration opens
- December 12th, 2025: Last day to submit artwork for the South Jersey Region
- January 28th, 2026: Regional Award winners announced
- Early March (exact date TBD): Regional Art Award Ceremony and Art Exhibition
