Turn your most creative ideas into movies, cartoons, music, and podcasts in our Media Arts summer film camp
Create original media, develop digital arts skills, and share your work with a camp community that cheers you on!
At Appel Farm, our Media Arts summer program for ages 8 to 16 gives the brightest ideas a place to grow. Campers build skills through hands-on projects in film, animation, podcasting, and music recording. They learn by working with other kiddos and using professional tools in a supportive overnight camp community designed for personal growth and artmaking!
Why families love our Media Arts & filmmaking summer program at Appel Farm
Families often come to Appel Farm looking for a place where their kiddo can feel comfortable and be creatively challenged. That is what makes Media Arts (formerly known as Arts & Tech) at Appel Farm special – they create art in community, with guidance from teaching artists and encouragement from other campers who are just as excited to create.
That spirit runs through the whole camp. Appel Farm is a nonprofit arts camp rooted in community building, inclusive practices, and restorative values. We want campers to feel safe being themselves, trying something new, making mistakes, and growing through the process.
Why podcasting, animation, music production, and filmmaking for kids work best in an overnight camp
A short class can be a great introduction. Camp, on the other hand, gives kids enough time to settle in and truly craft something worthwhile. It also gives them time to build trust with the people around them, and that makes collaborative work much stronger.
Just as important, campers are part of a full overnight camp experience while they do it. They live in a friendly, welcoming community with modern air-conditioned bunks, private bathrooms, balanced meals, and round-the-clock health support.
Why campers learn best by creating digital media projects together
Every Media Arts project asks campers to solve problems and work with others. As a result, they leave with a deeper understanding of artistic collaboration: how to listen, contribute, revise together, and see an idea through as a team.
Families can visit Appel Farm in person or join a virtual open house to get a feel for the spaces, meet the team, and learn more about daily life at camp. It is a simple way to see how Media Arts fits into the larger camp experience and what your camper’s summer could actually look like!
How does Appel Farm’s Media Arts program work?
For their daily schedule, campers choose one Major, two Minors, and a Free Choice period. Media Arts campers have dedicated time to build technical skills and work on projects, while still having room in their schedule for other fun activities and interests.
Media Arts as a Major
Kiddos who choose Media Arts as their Major will work on their biggest projects throughout the session, such as short films or song recordings. They spend focused time working in digital video and recording arts, learning how ideas move from concept to finished piece.
Throughout the session, campers learn about various digital Media Arts formats, including:
Media Arts Minors
Minors add range that can support the work campers are doing in Media Arts. Past Minors have included Music Videos and Acting for the Camera, which connect naturally to storytelling on screen.
That combination of Media Arts Majors and Minors is part of the magic. Skills build on each other across the day, and campers start to see how different art forms can work together!
Access to industry-standard Media Arts programs and tools
Campers work with professional digital video equipment and Adobe Premiere for editing. They also have access to a digital recording studio with ProTools workstation technology. This gives them hands-on experience with the same tools used by media professionals they look up to!
At the end of the session, Media Arts campers get to show off their work!
There’s just something different about making work that will actually be shared. In Media Arts, campers produce a short film that is shown to the full camp community at the end of the session. When the film is finally screened, they get to celebrate that work with the people who helped make it happen!

What young creators learn at our summer Film and Media Arts camp
Media Arts is a broad field, which is part of what makes it such a good fit for creative kids. At Appel Farm, they can try different forms of media making while learning the building blocks that connect them all.
Film production and visual storytelling
Campers learn how films are built step by step, from the earliest idea to the final edited version. That process gives them a strong creative foundation and helps them see how much thought goes into even a short piece of finished work.
- Producing: Campers learn how to organize a project, map out what needs to happen, and help the group move from idea to action.
- Screenwriting: They turn ideas into scripts, write scenes, and think about how a story will play on screen.
- Directing: Campers practice making creative decisions and helping other people bring a shared vision to life.
- Filming: Using digital video equipment, they learn how to shoot with purpose and think about framing and movement.
- Editing: In Adobe Premiere, campers pull their footage together, tighten the pacing, and add sound effects that help the story land.
Music recording and audio engineering basics
Campers can record original music with a band or create a soundtrack for a film, which helps them understand how sound can guide feeling, pace, and atmosphere.
- Record original music with a band: Campers collaborate, experiment, and hear how their ideas are transformed once they are recorded and played back.
- Create the soundtrack for a film: They can also build music for a film project, which teaches them how sound and story work together to create mood.
- Experiment with different sounds and styles: Campers try out genres, instruments, and effects to create their own unique sound.
- Build confidence through collaboration: Working with others helps campers listen and bring shared ideas to life.
Recording, editing, and producing podcasts
Some stories work best through sound. Campers can create podcasts by:
- Developing ideas: Turning random thoughts or interests into something worth sharing.
- Recording voices: Bringing stories to life with personality and a little bit of flair!
- Making conversations: Chatting, interviewing, or riffing with others to keep things interesting.
- Paying attention to rhythm, tone, and structure: Figuring out what makes something easy (and fun) to listen to.
It’s great for kids who love interviewing, performing, storytelling, or making people laugh.
Cartoon animation and digital art
For campers who love drawing, humor, or visual storytelling, our animation program adds another way to create. It gives them space to think about movement, character, and timing while making work that feels both creative and personal.
They can:
- Try simple animation basics: Getting a feel for how drawings come to life, frame by frame.
- Create original characters and stories: Dreaming up worlds, personalities, and ideas from scratch.
- Use both hand-drawn and digital tools: Switching between paper and screen to see what works best!
- Turn ideas into finished animations: Taking a rough concept and shaping it into something complete and shareable.
